5 Misconceptions About CrossFit

We get it, CrossFit can be intimidating.  CrossFit CMH in Reynoldsburg, Ohio wants to break down that barrier.  Maybe you’ve seen the CrossFit Games on TV or some ripped up individuals on social media lifting heavy weights and walking on their hands.  Whatever the case, CrossFit in the mainstream typically touts its top individuals just like any other sport.  Let’s take football for instance.  The public usually doesn’t see little league or backyard football, you’ll almost always see the NFL.  In this blog, we’re going to take a step back and bust some common misconceptions you may have about what CrossFit is.

You have to be fit to do CrossFit

This is the most common one that I hear, “It sounds fun, but I need to get in shape first”.  That couldn’t be further from the truth!  Joining a CrossFit gym to get in to shape is the path that most are on, not joining once you’re already in shape.  We scale workouts every day to make sure that the workout of the day suits your specific abilities.  We’re going to take time with you to teach you the proper mechanics of the movements so that you stay safe.  We’re also going to invest heavily to make sure that we understand the “why” behind you joining our gym.  In short, no you don’t have to be fit to do CrossFit, you just need to have an open mind and show up to class!

CrossFit is too expensive

We get it, we’re not $10 per month and we never will be.  Generally speaking, a $10 membership at a gym will yield $10 results.  Think about it, how many times have you walked in to a $10 per month gym and seen people watching videos on their phones while blindly walking on the treadmill.  Or maybe you walk in to a gym like that and the amount of equipment alone makes you cringe. The thought of putting all of them together for an effective workout can be intimidating. So what do you do? Most end up doing some bicep curls, crunches, and walking on the treadmill for a few.  That’s literally what gyms like that want, most of them make their money on people who forget to cancel their membership and just go on for months paying their dues without using their equipment.  We’re the opposite of that entire scenario.  We WANT you to come to class and we CARE about why your doing this.  We spend countless hours and thousands of dollars getting certified and researching effective and safe programming for YOU the member.  To be honest, $100 per month is actually a steal for a membership here.  Think about this, let’s say you get a personal trainer at one of those $10 per month gyms because you want to get better results.  Your initiative is spot on, however that personal trainer is going to charge you on average in Columbus, $40-$60 per hour.  Chances are, you’re going to do more than one session per month with them so let’s call it 1 session per week.  You’re already sitting at over $200 per month for your $10 per month gym.  That personal trainer may put you through a great circuit and you’ll probably get a great workout.  What if I told you that there was a place where you can workout with like minded people, who all actually give a shit about their results, that challenges you every time you walk in, and leaves you dripping sweat and excited to come back tomorrow.  Welcome to CrossFit CMH in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

CrossFit is dangerous

Just like any other physical activity, there is a chance of injury.  Running can cause injury, doing the elliptical can cause injury, walking to your car can cause injury, and CrossFit can cause injury.  We take every precaution to make sure that our members are properly warmed up for each movement we are doing that day, and that we teach proper movement mechanics to keep you safe.  This goes back to getting what you pay for.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cringed at normal gyms watching people squat or deadlift.  It seems like people let their egos get in the way and form goes out the window.  We spend time with each athlete watching and adjusting form.  We also spend time ramping each member up before we allow technical barbell movements and attempts at advanced gymnastics movements.  Our goal is to keep you safe and healthy, period.

CrossFit is too competitive

At CrossFit CMH, we compete with ourselves and not with each other.  This is why we track each workout in our system Zen Planner so that we can retest workouts to see our progress.  There’s always going to be some playful competition between friends or even spouses to see who can push harder, but at the end of the day…it’s You vs You.  By default, someone will come in first place and someone will finish last and that’s totally OK.  We don’t leave the gym until the last person finishes the workout and we always cheer that person on.  We clean up after each other, we help put each other’s stuff away, and we always support each other here.

CrossFit seems like chaos, classes must be confusing

Let’s go through a typical CrossFit class. We start with elevating your heart rate with a short run, row, or bike.  Once your heart rate is up, we’ll go through stretches that are targeted for the muscles we’re using that day.  After this, we’ll spend a significant amount of time learning and going over the day’s skill or strength such as gymnastics progressions or barbell movements.  We ALWAYS have options that are applicable to everyone at every level.  Once the skill or strength portion of the class is done, we’ll go over the WOD (Workout of the Day) and how to execute it with movement demos, strategy, and so on.  We say 3, 2, 1, GO and you go to town on the workout.  Class is 1 hour long on the dot and we get a ton of work in.

Final Thoughts

So that’s CrossFit in a nutshell.  We practice movements that are natural and found in real life such as pushing, pulling, squatting, running, and jumping.  We put these movements together in as many combinations as possible. CrossFit is safe, effective, and for everyone at all abilities.  We have members who are 16, members who are 62, entrepreneurs, college students, teachers, fireman, police officers, stay at home parents, nurses, members who have beaten cancer, and members who have never worked out a day in their life.  We’ve seen people come to us that couldn’t squat correctly, and now they’re lifting weights.  We’ve seen members who were very shy come out of their shells and become outgoing.
