What does “CMH” mean anyway?
In short, “CMH” is the airport code for our airport in Columbus. Really? A blog post for that? Let me back up a few years and explain real quick….
The Day My Life Changed
In 2012 I was working at GNC in Columbus. I was a manager and everything was pretty good, but I didn’t love my job. I knew that there was more out there for me, so I turned to a very close friend of mine, Cory Gregory, who was the co-founder of MusclePharm. The company he built was amazing and they were beginning to build a sales team. I pushed and pushed and finally when the time was right, Cory introduced me to Adam who was heading the sales team up. We clicked right away and I’ll never forget this, he said “Let’s do this man, I need you to get out to Denver on Tuesday”….it was Friday.
Home run right? Wrong. I had been dealing with anxiety for a few years, and the one thing that sent me over the edge was the thought of flying. I couldn’t believe the position I was in. I had my dream job right in front of me, but there was a 3 hour flight, which I was certain would send me in to multiple panic attacks, that stood between me and my dream. I couldn’t sleep all weekend thinking about Tuesday morning at 6am when I had to be at the airport. My anxiety was super high, and the thought of flying across the country trapped in a plane going to a place where I didn’t know anyone was getting to me. Somehow I decided to pack my bags and when Tuesday came, my wife drove me to the airport. I almost called her twice to come back and get me. I thought, “This job sounds amazing, but I can get a regular job and I’ll be fine. Why put myself through this?” This was fear. Fear in my head that was totally manufactured and untrue. I decided right then and there that I was done fearing the unknown and I was going to get on that plane. I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway.
That day changed my life. I went on to work at MusclePharm for 4 years and it was a great place to work. I saw a whole different side of the fitness industry and got to meet a ton of awesome people.
The Beginnings of CrossFit CMH
In early 2016 I knew it was time for a change in my life, so I started collecting gym equipment so that I could open my own gym. Working out and helping people has been a passion of mine for a long time and it was finally time to have a place of my own where I could help people change their lives. When I decided to take the plunge and open CrossFit CMH, that fear of the unknown came back. This feels uncomfortable, is this the right thing to do? Is it the right time? All the little thoughts telling me that I shouldn’t do this was standing between me and my dream once again. I thought back to that day in July of 2012, and said to myself “Enough is enough…..we’re doing this.” My wife was extremely supportive and believed in me, so we went ahead and put a business plan together. 10 months later, CrossFit CMH opened on May 8, 2017.
When I was filing for a name with CrossFit Inc. I could only think of one name that made sense for us, “CMH”. Without CMH (John Glenn Columbus International Airport, formerly Columbus Municipal Hangar) my life would look a lot different. I wouldn’t know how to push through that fear and experience the possibilities on the other side of it. That’s what our gym has become in the short time that we’ve been open. It’s a place where people can come and achieve goals, push past the fear of the unknown, and really change their lives for the better. Our gym is about overcoming adversity and being absolutely relentless in bettering your life.
I truly believe that you can do anything you set your mind to, IF you want it bad enough. There will always be a little voice in your head trying to talk you out of something that could change your life for the better because it’s uncomfortable and scary. Being uncomfortable forces you to grow. Those are times when you need to feel the fear and do it anyway.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our gym, come in for a free class and give us a try. We give our all everyday to help our members better their lives through CrossFit. Click HERE to sign up today!
